Implementing Research and Evaluation Strategies
Database Design: LPC staff are experts at designing user-friendly databases in Microsoft Access, from simple to sophisticated and multi-purpose. We work with each project to create a database that makes it easier to track services . A well designed database allows clients to collect data for reporting requirements, to monitor program activities, and to use relevant data when developing programs and applying for future funding. We provide ongoing technical support to refine the database, train project staff in data entry and running queries, and can develop a guide to help generate reports for management.
Survey Design and Data Collection Tools: LPC staff are skilled in the design of survey instruments, often in conjunction with the design of a database when warranted by the anticipated survey volume. We create user-friendly forms in formats that are easy on the eye (and the respondent), and that align with database data entry screens. We use tools like SurveyMonkey, an internet-based survey, to facilitate the survey process when appropriate, and we conduct follow-up to insure adequate response rates. LPC also is skilled at working with agencies to streamline data collection by reviewing existing data collection tools and requirements and developing forms that both fulfill needs and simplify tasks.
Focus Group Facilitation: LPC often supports client organizations in the course of conducting needs assessments or in gathering qualitative feedback about programs by convening focus groups to discuss particular issues or needs. We work with project staff to design the questions, coordinate and schedule the groups, facilitate the discussion and/or record responses, and analyze the qualitative data. The analysis may remain in a user-friendly format with “raw” responses, or be integrated into a narrative summary. We have the capacity to conduct focus groups with a variety of populations, including youth, language-specific groups, and program participants.
Interviews: LPC staff also design and conduct one-on-one interviews with stakeholders, public and private partners, board members, donors, and clients served. We have multiple skilled interviewers on staff as well as access to LPC associates who represent specific populations, cultures, and language groups, as needed. We recruit, train, and supervise each of our interviewers. Similar to focus group responses, we analyze interview responses in a user-friendly matrix format or in a written narrative to complete the product. We are prepared to conduct interviews face-to-face or via telephone.
Logic Model Workshops: Because the Logic Model is such an integral part of our evaluation practice, we have developed logic models for client organizations and agencies for many years. We conduct workshops (from 4-8 hours) engaging staff, partners, and clients in the workshops, aiming to impart this framework in a way that encourages professional and/or personal development. We use the input from any logic model workshop to design a viable logic model diagram, which can become the basis for enhancing and evaluating a client’s work.
Presentation Design: Over the years we have made many presentations to funders, boards of directors, clients and constituents, and partners. Most often we share information from an evaluation study or findings from data collection and analysis. We not only conduct the presentations, but are happy to work with organizations, agencies, and individuals to design their own presentations. We have staff who are skilled in designing attractive, understandable graphic displays of data for various audiences.
Needs Assessment Studies: LPC staff have a wide range of skills that are relevant for needs assessment studies. We use multiple methods, usually a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Tailored to project and audience, we often conduct focus group discussions, one-on-one interviews, and surveys via structured questionnaires. Depending on scope and complexity, needs assessments may require as little as 3-4 months or up to a year.
